Technique Thursday: Using Martha Stewart Adhesive Silkscreens on Glass

1. Silkscreen stencils can be applied to any nonporous glass or ceramic surface. For best results, the surface should be smooth. Clean the area to be painted with soap and water. Wipe with rubbing alcohol to remove any remaining residue.

2. Place objects on a flat surface large enough to accommodate your project. Create a unique pattern by repeating a silkscreen over an area. Arrange designs in a grid for a structured look, or apply randomly for a playful, organic effect.

Make sure to plan and measure both the silkscreen and the surface. To get an idea of what it will look like before you commit to paint, copy and print the design on paper first and tape it to your surface. Finalize your design and mark the placement with a wax pencil. For a look that’s cohesive and natural, limit your palette to one, two, or three colors. Use varying shades of one color, complementary colors, or colors in the same family (warm tones, cool, tones, rich tones, pastels, etc.).

3. Foam Pouncer Method. Ideal for curved or intricate areas and small surfaces. Pour a small amount of paint onto your palette. Load paint sparingly on a foam pouncer and dab excess, dab on a layer of paint. Apply second coat if necessary.

4. Cut the silkscreen you’ll be using from the sheet, using the pre-printed lines as a guide. Remove backing from the silkscreen and set aside. Position the silkscreen on the surface, smoothing to eliminate any wrinkles.

Squeegee Method. Ideal for flat surfaces or large spaces. Apply a line of paint along one edge of the silkscreen. Place the squeegee above the line of paint and pull it down into the design area with light and even pressure. Use a smooth, fluid motion to spread the paint. Continue spreading until the paint fills the entire design area.

5. While the paint is still wet, carefully peel the silkscreen off. Continue painting your design. Be sure to wash and completely dry each silkscreen before reusing it. Let each painted design dry for 30 minutes before applying another silkscreen. Allow your project to dry completely. Refer to the paint bottle for drying times and curing information.

6. Your finished project! To cleanup, rinse silkscreens and squeegee and/or pouncer immediately after use to remove excess paint. Do not allow paint to dry on silkscreens.
