Make it Monday: Chevron Tray

The chevron pattern is one of the hottest craft trends this year. This pattern has been seen everywhere, from furniture to clothing. Here is a great project that incorporates this popular trend. This chevron tray is so cute. Trays are a great surface to craft on. Have you ever tried upcycling a basic tray? See below how you can create your very own chevron tray. This is a perfect craft project to create for spring. Have you created anything with the chevron pattern lately?

Plaid Supplies

  • FolkArt Acrylic Paint – 901 Wicker White
  • FolkArt Acrylic Paint – 2553 Lime Green
  • Mod Podge

Other Supplies

  • Painting trim kit with roller, Painter’s tape, Craft knife, measuring tape or small ruler, Paintbrush for touch ups, and Foam paintbrush

Instructions

1. Using the paint roller in the trim kit, coat the bottom and sides or the tray with Wicker White.

2. Let dry and repeat. Give the tray a second coat to insure even coverage.

3. Create the chevron pattern using the painter’s tape and measuring tape or ruler. Use the craft knife to cut the tape in corners or to remove excess.

4. To prevent bleeding a light coat of Wicker White can be applied over the edges of the painter’s tape pattern.

5. Use the paint roller to apply Lime Green paint over top of the chevron pattern and sides of the tray.

6. Let dry for several hours.

7. Remove tape revealing the completed pattern.

8. Use a paint brush to correct any bleeding.

Make it Monday: Silver Mirror

Hello, and welcome to the beginning of a wonderful week. We hope you had a good weekend, and remembered to change your clocks. Once we change the clocks, it signals that spring is fast approaching. Here in Atlanta it feels like spring is already here. We have had the pleasure of experiencing some nice weather recently. During the spring season many people begin doing some spring cleaning, and spring shopping. Home decor, is all the rage especially this time of year. In case you are looking for a cost effective way to spruce up some of your home items, may we suggest slapping on a new coat of paint. I know this may sound simple, but actually a new coat of paint on a piece of furniture can breathe new life into your home. Take this silver mirror, designed by Laura Whitlow. This mirror was given a new life, by adding some FolkArt paint to it. How chic is this? Give it a try for yourself. Enjoy!

PLAID Supplies

  • FolkArt ® Stains – Walnut, 2 oz.
  • FolkArt ® Acrylic Colors – Silver Metallic, 8 oz

Other Supplies

Primer
Paintbrushes
Sandpaper
Soft cloth for glazing
Fancy frame

Instructions

1.Roughly sand piece to remove factory polyurethane finish….then prime.

2. Paint with Folk Art Silver  - apply  two coats.  When completely dry, sand with 80 grit sandpaper to distress edges.

3. Using a soft rag, apply Walnut stain, using more on the distressed edges.

4. Add new hardware to update piece – we chose something with some “bling” – choose what fits your space and taste!

Make It Monday: Shamrock Garden Stakes

It is less than two weeks until St. Patrick’s Day. Time is winding down to create some festive crafts. Luckily we here at Plaid, can give you some inspiration. These cute shamrock garden stakes bring new meaning to having a “green thumb”. Whip-up a batch to sprinkle through your garden for St. Patrick’s Day or tuck one into a pot of clover for a sweet gift. This creative St. Patrick’s Day craft was created by, Laura Bray. This is a beginner skill level craft, that will take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete. See all the supplies you will need for this project, along with the instructions.

Plaid Supplies

FolkArt Extreme Glitter-2796 Hologram, FolkArt Paint-429 Winter White, Mod Podge-Outdoor

Other Supplies

3” x 4” wood shamrock blocks, Wood dowels (3/16” in diameter), Green and white scrapbook papers, Flower-shaped acrylic crystals, craft/wood glue, Black & white gingham ribbon

Instructions

  1. My shamrock shapes came painted, but if you purchase unpainted shamrocks, apply FolkArt paint in a shade of green to your block.  Allow paint to dry.
  2. Apply two coats of Extreme Glitter in Hologram to the shamrocks.  Set aside to dry.
  3. Using FolkArt paint in Winter White,  paint wood dowels.  Set aside to dry.
  4. Cut shamrock shapes, measuring smaller than your wood shamrock blocks, from scrapbook paper and apply to painted shamrock blocks using Outdoor Mod Podge.  Be sure to coat over the paper to protect the paper from light moisture. While Mod Podge is still wet, embed an acrylic, flower-shaped crystal into the center of the shamrock.

TIP: An easy way to create shamrock shapes is to cut out three heart shapes and join them at the pointed end of the hearts.

  1. Glue a painted wood dowel onto the back of your shamrock.
  2. Tie a black & white gingham ribbon to the dowel, directly beneath the shamrock.

Please note, these are delicate and care should be taken to protect them from the elements. Outdoor Mod Podge is protecting them, but there are also ribbons and acrylic crystals that can be compromised by the weather.

Make it Monday: Wood File Box

In the quest to get more organized, you are going to need the appropriate storage boxes and containers. Unfortunately most stores do not carry stylish storage boxes, but that’s ok. Your crafty, and we here at Plaid are here to help you jazz up your boring old boxes. Organize in style by making this chic wood file box. This box was created by, Kirsten Jones. It is absolutely adorable, and fashionable. See below all the supplies you will need, and instructions on how to make your own stylish storage box.

PLAID Supplies

  • FolkArt ® Acrylic Colors – Pink, 2 oz.
  • FolkArt ® Acrylic Colors – Wicker White, 2 oz.
  • FolkArt ® Acrylic Colors – Licorice, 2 oz.
  • Mod Podge ® Gloss, 4 oz.

Other Supplies

Wood file box, 2 pieces of scrapbook paper- same pattern of desired colors, 1 sheet- black and white dot paper, 4″ wood letter, ¾” paintbrush, Pencil, Scissors, Hot glue and hot glue gun

Instructions

  1. Basecoat box with Wicker White, let dry. Paint edges that will show with Pink, let dry.
  2. Using box as a pattern, cut paper to fit on all four sides.
  3. Following general directions on Mod Podge bottle, apply paper to box. Let dry.
  4. Paint letter Licorice. Let dry.
  5. Using letter as pattern cut dot paper out shape of letter and Mod Podge to surface. Let dry.
  6. Glue letter to front of box.

Make it Monday: Black and White Holiday Decor

Even though the Christmas is technically over, it is still the holiday season. And if you would like to continue crafting Holiday crafts then you will like making this black and white wall plaque. Create this black and white mantel plaque, which will look great hanging on a wall in your home. This an intermediate level skilled craft. This project will take 2 hours or more to complete.

Plaid Supplies

FolkArt Acrylic Paint – 661 Metallic Sequin Black

FolkArt Acrylic Paint – 901 Wicker White

Other Supplies

Wood plaque, Paintbrushes, Clear gloss hobby and craft spray, Ruler (optional), Holiday message stencil (optional)

Instructions

1. Start by sanding the wood plaque to smooth any rough spots and edges prior to painting.

2. Remove and dust left behind on plaque.

3. Apply 1 coat of FolkArt Acrylic Paint – Metallic Sequin Black to the back of the wood plaque. Let dry for 10 to 15 minutes and repeat.

4. Let back of plaque dry at least 1 hour. When paint is dry, apply 2 coats of paint to the front as well. Let dry.

5. To create the look of a snow packed ground, use a thin bristle brush and make slight arches across the bottom of the plaque.

Painting the Trees

1. Use FolkArt Acrylic Paint – Wicker White and a thin bristle paintbrush to make the various sized trees.

2. Make the tree tops by making short strokes, as if you were writing the letter “J”.

3. Once you have made the tree tops use the same idea to shape the base of the tree.

4. Fill in the tree body using the same stroke pattern.

5. Make dots by dipping the paintbrush end in the paint to and add them to the tree body as well.

For the Snowflakes

1. Use the back of the paintbrush to makes dots in the places you wish to have snowflakes.

2. Drop small beads of the ModPodge Dimensional onto the paint dots placed on the plaque.

3. Allow the ModPodge Dimensional to dry at least 2 – 3 hours.

4. When the ModPodge Dimensional is dry, again use the back of the brush dipped in paint and dot the top of the dry ModPodge drops.

 For the Text

1. With a steady hand use the same thin brush to paint the text on to the plaque. You can also use a stencil to add your holiday greeting or make your own using FolkArt Peel and Stick Painting Stencils.

Make It Monday: Holiday Sleigh Holder

With all the holiday decorating approaching, you might need an extra place to act as a storage holder. Why not re-create this holiday sleigh holder.Use this sleigh holder to store ornaments, party favors, or even drinks for your annual holiday party. Regardless what you put inside this sleigh, this is a great holiday project to make.

Plaid Supplies:

FA Acrylics: 437 Lipstick Red, 2578 New Leaf Green, 2553  Lime Green, 2573 French Vanilla

676 FA Metallic Ince Gold

2538 FA Chalkboard Paint  Red

FA Extreme Glitter paints: 2786 Gold, 2796 Hologram

Other Supplies Needed:

14 1/2 in.  x 6 1/2 in.  wooden box , Two 6 3/4″ J’s, Two 6 3/4″ I’s, 3″ wooden circle, 1″ wooden square, 1/8″ gold ribbon, 1/4″ masking tape, 3/4″ masking tape, E6000, glue, Two small eye screws, 3/4″ flat brush, 1/2″ flat brush, Liner brush, 1/4″ dauber

Instructions:

1. Basecoat the box with french vanilla.

2.  Cut out a rectangle from a scrap piece of paper and tape to the one side of the box.  Tape on the underside.

3.  Using the 1/4″ and 3/4″ masking tape, tape off crooked stripes over the paper.

4.  Paint the stripes in lipstick red, new leaf green and lime green.

5.  Remove tape and the rectangle paper.

6.  Tape off the outside of the rectangle and paint the inside with red chalkboard paint.

7.  Basecoat the inside of the box with lipstick red.  Paint the rim of box with inca gold and once dry add gold extreme glitter.

8.  Basecoat the letters with metallic inca gold.

9.  Add gold extreme glitter to the gold letters.

10.  Tape off a 1/4″ border around the red chalkboard paint.

11.  Paint inca gold.   Add gold extreme glitter on top. Remove the tape.

12.  Basecoat the wooden circle with new leaf green.

13.  Add hologram extreme glitter on top of the new leaf green.

14.  Paint the ornament holder in inca gold in the left upper hand corner of the box.

15.  Add gold extreme glitter on top.

16.  Use a wooden square to pop out the ornament.  Glue it in place.

17.  Glue the legs to the bottom of box.

18.  Screw the small eye screw in the front of sleigh.

19.  Glue the ornament on top of the wooden square.  Tie a bow with the 1/8″ gold ribbon and glue to hanger of ornament.  Paint dots in inca gold.

20.  Add gold extreme glitter to the gold dots.

21.  Add lipstick red and lime green dots using a spouncer.

22.   Paint black swirls on the “j” and “i”.  Once it is dry add gold extreme glitter.  Using the 1/8″ gold ribbon, tie it to the small eyescrew.

Make it Monday: Personalized Xmas Decor

Personalized crafting is something you can do all year round. It is a great way to be as creative you would like. Personalized gifts definitely make a great holiday gift to give your friends and family. Using someones initials as a theme for a gift, is sure to make the receiver feel special. For a more unique design, try using non traditional holiday colors to create this project. This is a beginner level craft, that will take thirty minutes to and hour to complete.

Plaid Supplies

Folkart Acrylic Paint- 479 Pure Black

FolkArt Acrylic Paint-437 Lipstick Red

FolkArt Acrylic Paint-938 Licorice

Mod Podge

Other Supplies

8 inch x 6 inch oval wood plaque, Black and white decorative paper, Wood letter, Craft glue, Black and white decorative ribbon, and Thumb tacks.

Instructions

  1. Paint oval plaque with Plaid Licorice paint.  Allow to dry.
  2. Paint wood letter with Plaid Lipstick paint.  Set aside and allow to dry.
  3. Cut an oval, measuring 6 ½ inches x 5 inches from decorative paper.  Apply to center of oval plaque, using Mod Podge.
  4. Glue wood letter onto plaque, centering it on the decorative paper oval.
  5. Cut 2 lengths of ribbon, each measuring approximately 10 inches.
  6. Tack each piece of ribbon on the back of the plaque, at the top, placing each one 1 inch from the center point.
  7. Tie ends of ribbon in a bow and hang.

Make it Monday: Banner of Thanks

I gathered my supplies for this banner without really knowing what the project was going to look like when I was finished.  I do that, sometimes, and am usually happily surprised with what I come up with.  I found these perfectly sized letters at Michaels and was pleased with their size and font style.

I painted the letters Coffee Bean brown and, when they were dry, rubbed them with a piece of paraffin wax.  It’s best to use a soft cloth to wipe off the extra wax that builds up, before painting the letters again with Glazed Carrots.  Set them aside until they’re dry.

Sand lightly, and a bit of Coffee Bean will show through, especially on the ridges of these letters.

I measured eight pieces of paper 2.5″ x 5″, and cut the corners off, as you can see from this picture.  Then, I used a glue stick to glue each beige piece to the orange paper and cut each out with a small border.  I didn’t measure each piece or border, but you can, if you want.

And then, I just kept going, with two more colors from the paper pack, leaving a large, 2″ border on top of each finished one, so I could have a section of paper to attach the ribbon to later.

I added polka dots to the beige paper, also.  I used my ruler and measured 1/4″ between each dot, made myself a small mark with a pencil, and dipped an old stencil brush end into the Coffee Bean paint and dabbed the dots.  Very simple, really, but it perked up the beige paper, and looked great underneath the letters.  Then I used craft glue to attach the letters to each paper.

I used my craft knife to cut a small slit at the top of each letter, and threaded some pretty orange silk ribbon through each one, doubled at the top end.

I threaded the hanging ribbon through each loop and tied the loop to the hanging ribbon. (easier to make it than describe it).  Hopefully, this picture helps!  Also, I started threading the letters in reverse, tying the “L” in thankful first.  This kept me from wasting that beautiful sheer ribbon I was tying the letters to.

I spaced the letters evenly by tying another loop of brown sheer ribbon between each hanging letter.  It also gave the project a little more color.  I glued the buttons to the knots at the tops of the letters to keep it anchored.  Sometimes, this pretty silky ribbon is slippery and the glue held them in place!
