Make it Monday: Chevron Tray

The chevron pattern is one of the hottest craft trends this year. This pattern has been seen everywhere, from furniture to clothing. Here is a great project that incorporates this popular trend. This chevron tray is so cute. Trays are a great surface to craft on. Have you ever tried upcycling a basic tray? See below how you can create your very own chevron tray. This is a perfect craft project to create for spring. Have you created anything with the chevron pattern lately?

Plaid Supplies

  • FolkArt Acrylic Paint – 901 Wicker White
  • FolkArt Acrylic Paint – 2553 Lime Green
  • Mod Podge

Other Supplies

  • Painting trim kit with roller, Painter’s tape, Craft knife, measuring tape or small ruler, Paintbrush for touch ups, and Foam paintbrush

Instructions

1. Using the paint roller in the trim kit, coat the bottom and sides or the tray with Wicker White.

2. Let dry and repeat. Give the tray a second coat to insure even coverage.

3. Create the chevron pattern using the painter’s tape and measuring tape or ruler. Use the craft knife to cut the tape in corners or to remove excess.

4. To prevent bleeding a light coat of Wicker White can be applied over the edges of the painter’s tape pattern.

5. Use the paint roller to apply Lime Green paint over top of the chevron pattern and sides of the tray.

6. Let dry for several hours.

7. Remove tape revealing the completed pattern.

8. Use a paint brush to correct any bleeding.

Scene it Saturday: FolkArt & Apple Barrel Spring Floral Nail Art

Typically when you think of FolkArt and Apple Barrel paints, you know them to be used on craft projects. Well that is a correct use, however did you know that people use these paints on their nails? I can’t tell you how fascinated I am by all the creative videos you can find on YouTube. Normally I am always scouring YouTube to watch cool craft how to videos, and I recently stumbled across how to nail art that included craft paints. Check out this video, and learn how you can use FolkArt and Apple Barrel paints to create a spring floral nail design.

Make it Monday: Lucky Plaque

Happy Monday everyone. How was your weekend? Hopefully you had a good one. It’s a new week, and can you believe that the month of February is almost over? March will arrive this week, which means St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner. Are you still looking for some craft projects to make to celebrate this holiday? Well we can help. Here is a great project to try, this Lucky Plaque. This project was designed by, Laura Bray. It is a beginner level craft project, that will take up to an hour to complete. See below the supplies you will need, and instructions on how to create this plaque. Enjoy!

Plaid Supplies

FolkArt Extreme Glitter-2796 Hologram, FolkArt Extreme Glitter-2857 Royal Blue, FolkArt Paint-429 Winter White, FolkArt Paint-526 Soft Apple, FolkArt Paint-484 Brilliant Ultramarine

Other Supplies

Wood plaque (5” X 20”), Wood shamrock (4” x 4”), Wood letters spelling out “LUCKY” (4” tall), Craft glue, Green and white polka dot ribbon

Instructions

  1. Paint wood letters in FolkArt-Brilliant Ultramarine.  Allow paint to dry.
  2. Once paint is dry, apply two coats of Extreme Glitter-Royal Blue to the letters.  Allow to dry between coats.
  3. Using FolkArt paint in Winter White and Soft Apple,  paint the wood plaque.
  4. Once paint is dry, apply two coats of Extreme Glitter-Hologram to the plaque.
  5. Paint the shamrock shape.  Paint stripes on the shamrock using FolkArt Brilliant Ultramarine, Soft Apple, and Winter White.  Allow to dry, then apply two coats of Extreme Glitter-Hologram over the shamrock.
  6. Glue letters onto plaque, spelling out the word, “Lucky”.  Make sure you leave room to attach the shamrock later.
  7. Glue shamrock to the top right corner of the plaque.
  8. Attach green & white ribbon to the plaque.  Tie bows where attached.  Hang and enjoy your unique St. Patrick’s Day décor!

Teaching Thursdays: New Year Eve Altered Dinner Charger

Are you looking for some craft projects to make to celebrate the New Year? Well your in luck Cathie and Steve have created several festive projects that are sure to help you ring in the new year in style. One of their creations is this altered dinner charger. How cute and stylish is this charger? You will definitely be the envy of all your friends when they see this at your home. A simple yet festive craft project. PLAID Supplies

  • FolkArt ® Acrylic Colors – Light Peony, 2 oz.
  • Mod Podge ® Matte, 8 oz.

Other Supplies
Detail painter, Dinner plate charger, Foam paintbrush, Scissors, Piece of black and white scrapbook paper, Piece of distressed black scrapbook paper, Printed words – Happy New Year

Instructions

  1. Cut a circle of black and white scrapbook paper that fits the center of the charger.
  2. Coat both sides of the paper with Mod Podge, position in the center of the charger and topcoat with more Mod Podge. Use your fingers to press out any air bubbles. Smooth your brush strokes. Allow to dry.
  3. Cut a circle of distressed black scrapbook paper that fits the center of the charger. Tear the paper in half leaving a torn edge. Apply to the center of the charger as described in step two.
  4. Working on the distressed paper side on the charger. Apply the words “Happy New Year” as described in step two.
  5. Dip the end of the detail painter into the light peony paint, tap off the excess and paint dots on the distressed paper side. Work the dots over the edges of the words.

A Personalized Christmas Ornament

Supplies:

FA Metallics: 676 Metallic Inca Gold, 657 Metallic Regal Red

FA Extreme Glitters: 2792 Red, 2786 Gold, 2796 Hologram

FA Acrylic Paints: 2578 New Leaf Green, 2553 Lime Green

Other Supplies: Large Red Glass ornament, Printer, 1/4″ Gold Ribbon, 5/8″ dauber, 1/4″ dauber, Liner brush

Instructions:

1.  Purchase a red glass ornament.

2.  Add red extreme glitter to the glass ornament using the 5/8″ dauber.

3.  Outline a lime green circle with the liner brush.


4.  Using the 1/4″ dauber, add lime green dots on top of the line.


5.  Add two more rows of dots.

6.  Print a letter from the computer and transfer it onto the center of the ball. Paint with the inca gold and then add extreme glitter once it dries.

7.  Add hologram extreme glitter to the wreath.


8.  Add Metallic regal red berries using the end of the liner brush.


9.  Add red extreme glitter to the berries.


10.  Add a gold bow to the wreath.

Plaid’s 12 Days of Christmas: 4 Days to go

The clock is winding down, with only 4 days to go til the big day there is still plenty of time to get in the holiday spirit. A great way to get in the spirit is decorating your Christmas tress. Many of you have done this already probably, however I have heard that many decorate their trees in the days leading up to Christmas. In case you are looking to add some more ornaments to your tree, try creating these Vintage Ornaments. Julie Lewis designed these vintage ornaments. Aren’t these ornaments so unique and cute? Plaid’s 12 Days of Christmas: 7 days to go

Here is a great holiday recycle project you can make. If you just ordered some Chinese takeout, your in luck. We have a great project you can create using these left over boxes. Try creating this Holiday Forest Chinese Box. This was designed by one of our designers, Kindra Boroff. See below all the supplies you will need, and the instructions below.

PLAID Supplies

  • FolkArt ® Artists Pigments™ – Pure Black, 2 oz.
  • Mod Podge ® Dimensional Magic, 2 oz.
  • Mod Podge ® Matte, 4 oz.

Other Supplies

Chinese takeout box, Scrapbook paper, 1/8” Red satin ribbon, Hot glue, Scissors, Hole punch, Pop dots

Instructions

  1. Carefully unassembled the Chinese box. Using the sides as patterns, trace on the polka dot paper. Cut out and adhere to the sides with Mod Podge.
  2. Trace a section of the tree lined paper for the front of the box. Cut the trees out. Adhere to the front of the box with Mod Podge. Cut 2 more trees out individually.
  3. Apply a coat of Dimensional Magic to the trees and allow to dry completely.
  4. Attach the 2 separate trees to the front with pop dots as shown.
  5. Cut 3 ½” circle from the green striped paper. Using the circle as a template, create a scalloped edge larger than the circle. Lay the green circle on top of the polka dot and glue with Mod Podge.
  6. Trace a small circle around the bird and glue to the center of the large circle. Apply Dimensional Magic to the small circle.
  7. Hot glue the red ribbon around the edge of the box as shown.
  8. Punch two holes in the circle tag and tie to the top of the box with red ribbon.

Small toy animals
Assorted sizes of pillar and taper candles

Brush basin or container of water

Instructions

Painting Instructions:

Candles

  1. Using a foam pouncer, apply three to four coats of glitter paint by dabbing straight up and down to the surface of the candle.  Allow each application of glitter paint to dry before applying the next.
  2. Continue painting until each candle is glitter painted to your liking.  NOTE:  Do not apply paint at the top of each candle near the wick.

Small Plastic Animals

  1. Using a foam pouncer, undercoat each animal with a coat of pearl paints – either Copper, Yellow Gold or Sterling.  Dab the loaded pouncer straight up and down to apply the paint.  Allow to dry.
  2. When dry, paint a couple coats of glitter paint over the pearl.  Paint Copper glitter over Cooper pearl, Florentine Gold glitter over Yellow Gold pearl, and Antique Silver glitter over Sterling pearl.  Allow each coat of glitter paint to thoroughly dry before applying the next.

Teaching Thursdays: Cupcake Ornaments

Looking for a way to add something sweet to your Christmas tree? Well one of our talented designers, Sherrie Ragsdale, created these yummy cupcake ornaments. Have you ever seen an ornament so cute and delicious looking? I love these, and am you will enjoy them also. See below to find the step by step instructions of how to create these.

Supplies:

Folkart Enamel Paint:
4133 Lipstick Red
4001 Wicker White
4138  Lime Green
4039 Calypso Sky

Folkart Extreme Glitter:
2787 Silver

Folkart Acrylic Paints:
940 Coffee Bean
2561 Steel Gray

30474 Folkart Peel and Stick Painting Stencil
50147 Plaid Dauber Set

Other Supplies:

Three 75mm Clear glass disc ornaments, Plastic knife, Green sequins, Star sequins, Extra small red rhinestones, Small blue rhinestones, Small clear rhinestones, White mini baking cups, White craft glue, E6000 glue, Three small wooden beads, Red, Green, and Clear beads, Silver beads, 1/8″ silver ribbon, Hot glue

Instructions:


1.  Pour a small amount of coffee bean into ornaments and then turn until the they are completely covered.  Allow to dry.


2.  Using the plastic knife, frost each ornament with lipstick red, lime green and wicker white.  All to dry.


3.  For the green cupcake, add white circles the same size as the peppermint stencil.  Allow to dry.


4.  Stencil the  peppermint in lipstick red with 5/8″ dauber.


5.  Glue small clear rhinestones into the centers of each peppermint with white craft glue.

6.  Glue green sequins to red cupcake.  Add the silver star sequin to the top of tree.  Add the silver extreme glitter to the star.


7.  Add red rhinestones.

8.  For the white cupcake, start the snowflake by making a plus sign using the liner brush.


9.  Next, add the details to the ends.


10.  Finish snowflake by adding dots at the end of each line using the end of a paint brush.

11.  Glue the blue rhinestones to the snowflakes.

12.  Use white glue and a dauber and glue a set of cups together at the edges.

13.  Paint the cup gray.

14.  Use dauber to add silver extreme glitter.

15.  I used a wooden bead to glue the ornament to the cupcake but you can use anything that would fit as long as the E6000 works on the surface.

16.  Cut silver ribbon and fold in half glue the ends together.  Make a small fold and hot glue to the center of ornament.  Add beads.


17. Cut another piece of silver ribbon and add to tag.


18.  Tie tag around the ornament hanger.
