Teaching Thursdays: Elegant Witch’s Hat Centerpiece

This project was created by Holli Long. To see more of Holli’s work visit her blog, .

I’ve always wanted to paint a witch’s hat for my yearly Halloween decorations.  I found this little baby at Michaels and couldn’t resist!  I decided to use the beautiful new Elegant Halloween trend to paint it.  It’s a quick project, this one taking me just a couple of hours one morning.

I decided to basecoat the hat with Licorice to begin with, but definitely wanted the hat to be glittery silver when I was finished.

I double loaded a large flat brush with Light Gray and Silver Sterling and coated the entire hat.  Every so often, I would pick up a little bit of Gunmetal Gray to add to the mix.

When it was dry I painted three light coats of Silver Extreme Glitter over the entire surface.

I freehanded these swirls with a liner brush, using Metallic Sequin Black.  This paint is thin enough that I didn’t have to add water to it to make these beautiful swirls.

I used hot glue to add the ribbon and bat as embellishments.

Elegant Witch’s Hat Centerpiece Supplies:

Folk Art® Acrylic Colors: 424 Light Gray, 928 Licorice

Folk Art® Metallic Colors: 662 Metallic Silver Sterling, 667 Gunmetal Gray

Folk Art® Extreme Glitter: 2787 Silver

Paper Mache Witch’s Hat, large flat brush, liner brush, orange sheer ribbon, black rick rack, black bat with glittery wings embellishment

Teaching Thursdays: Drab to Fabulous Clock Makeover

A dramatic face-lift for a drab thrift store clock is as easy as a few hours, some paint, glitter and lots of bling! Adapt your palette to your décor, or the face of the clock. Just have fun and make some drab clock fabulous!

Gather your supplies.

Place a strip of tape along edge of clock face and indent with thumb.

Use craft knife to trim away excess.

Cover the rest of the face with tape and any other details you don’t want painted.

Dip your sponge in a metallic cover and dab over exposed areas of clock…

Like this….

Apply second and third color in same manner to clock and base. Let dry.

Using liner brush, begin strokes with Licorice to create flowers…

Create a cross shape and then fill in between petals to finish flower…

Like this…paint wherever you wish flowers to be.

Here is what my clock looks like now.

Add dots around frame of clock face using opposite end of paintbrush dipped in Licorice. Start with 12, 3, 6 and 9…..

Then fill in between.

Apply black Extreme Glitter with brush to petals and dots. Apply as many coats as desired.

Let dry until clear and glittery!

Remove tape.

Apply your adhesive backed jewels where desired.

Use tweezers if needed to apply tiny jewels.

Drab to fab-ulous! Metallic and glitter…the perfect combo…

Here is what Plaid Designer, Julie Lewis used to decorate this little clock:

FolkArt® Acrylic Paint – 938 Licorice

FolkArt® Metallic Paint – 660 Pure Gold, 664 Copper, 671 Peridot

FolkArt® Extreme Glitter™ – 2797 Black

Sea sponge

#1 Liner brush

Tape

Craft knife

Adhesive backed jewels

Thrift store plastic clock

Web Wednesday: DIY Faceted Earrings

When it comes to jewelry, I don’t know any girl that doesn’t love it. Jewelry is a girl’s best friend, and can be worn in many different ways. Aside from receiving jewelry or buying it, I enjoy making jewelry from time to time. The best thing I love about making jewelry is that when someone asks you where you bought that, you become all warm and fuzzy inside, because you made it! I recently came across this DIY earring tutorial from, Think Crafts. I love this project especially, because I mainly prefer to wear post earrings, and it was made using FolkArt paint.  These earrings are simple, yet flashy. Wear them paired with a cocktail dress, or with a cute top and jeans. See the video below for instructions to follow, and please check out Think Crafts for more great craft ideas.

If you want to do it on your own, here’s what you’ll need:

  • 0.25 oz polymer clay
  • 1 pair earring studs
  • Jewelry adhesive (E600) or Super Glue
  • Acrylic paint – I mixed 1/2 Folk Art Metallic Pure Gold and 1/2 Folk Art Metallic Taupe to get the color I wanted
  • Paintbrush
  • Razor Blade

There is something about contrast that draws the eye and invites visual interest. And this piece fits the bill. There is something pleasing and surprising with the contrast between the ice blue fruit, and the worn crackled plate and pedestal. Easy to make and fun to create. Make It Monday: Funky Crackled Stool

Most times, when I use a Crackle Medium, I’m looking for an aged look.  I think I’m not alone in this, most people use it to make things look old, distressed, and antiqued.  I thought it would be different  to try a project using Crackle Medium with bright colors, on a surface that can be used in a playroom or a child’s room as a place to put a favorite toy or stack books.  You don’t ever want to use these stools for your child to use as a step up for anything, as they are sold for decorative purposes only, and are not equipped with non skid feet.

I basecoated the stool using a bright palette of Wicker White, Calico Red, School Bus Yellow, and Lime Green.  When all was dry, I used tape to outline the area of School Bus Yellow in the center of my stool.  Yes, the project looks quite unfinished at this point, but I planned on adding lots of Folk Art Licorice to the stool, so I left those sections mostly bare.

And then I added the Crackle Medium.  I use a light coat to begin with and let that dry completely before adding another coat, a little thicker than the first, and let it cure overnight.  I also added Crackle Medium in the same way to the legs where I basecoated them School Bus Yellow.

Working quickly, I used a 3/4″ flat brush to apply a coat of Deep Ocean Blue to both the top of the stool and the legs.  No need to be afraid here, crackling is so much easier than you think.  I allowed the project to dry completely again and sealed it with a Satin brush on sealer.  Since I was planning on adding color on top of the crackled coat, I wanted to make sure my next color wouldn’t crack, also.

I measured out my surface onto a piece of tracing paper and drew my design on that before starting.  Here, I took my tracing paper and turned it upside down on the dry crackled surface to transfer the pattern I had made.  You can see a hint of the crackle under the tracing paper.  The yellow cracks look great under the blue top coat!

After transferring the pattern, I used watered down Licorice and a script liner brush to paint the lines in.  I didn’t try to make them perfect, just filled in as I went.  The design of this stool didn’t call for perfection, just fun!

I added Licorice checks to the sides of the stool, and dry brushed a white highlight in their centers.  I also painted large polka dots along the Lime Green border on the top.  I filled in with Licorice on the “hard-to-paint” sections of the legs, which made painting them so much easier!

Painted Hanging Nursery Letters

Metallics aren’t just for holidays anymore!  It’s interesting that I found this post from Amber at Cross My Heart, because I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how to incorporate FolkArt Metallics into everyday projects.  It turns out it wasn’t that hard for Amber, and she made these cute painted plaque letters for her best friend’s baby nursery.  I love how the shimmery paint coordinates so well with the papers she selected.  Find the project tutorial here.
