Create A Fiesta Banner

Break out the chips, guacamole, and salsa. It’s time to have a fiesta! The first big celebration to take place this month is Cinco de Mayo, and it is this Saturday. Although it is soon, you still have plenty of time to gather some decorations to throw a party. This fiesta banner is a fun project to create. Use this banner at your party, and it is sure to be the center of attention. Below are all the supplies you will need, and we show you step by step how to create this project.

Step by Step Instructions

1.  Base-coat all the hats with matching colors.

2.  Cut out the stencil for the zigzag around the each out of poster board and then stencil with licorice.

3.  Hot glue pompoms to the edge of each hat.

4.  Stencil each letter onto poster board and in black and then cut out leaving small border.

5.  Paint a curvy line using the stencil brush on each letter. See the rest of the steps here.

Floral ZigZag Maracas

Since Cinco de Mayo is quickly approaching, we here at Plaid wanted to share with you another project you can create for this occasion. Shake up some fun using these Floral ZigZag Maracas. One of our fabulous designers, Kindra Boroff created these maracas. These were made using FolkArt paint, FolkArt Extreme Glitter, and Mod Podge. This is an intermediate level craft that will take 2 hours to complete. Be the life of the party with these bright and festive maracas. Enjoy!

Plaid Supplies

FolkArt Acrylic Paint: 2553 Lime Green, 2578 New Leaf Green,  412 Magenta, 660 Pure Gold

FolkArt Extreme Glitter: 2836 Champagne

Mod Podge: CS11305 4oz Matte

Plaid tools: 1534 1 ¼” Spouncer,  1” Flat

Other Supplies

6” Paper mache eggs, Large dowel rods, Dried beans, Brown craft paper, Hot glue, Sandpaper, Scissors, Gloss Sealer

Instructions

1. Cut the dowel rods into 2- 11” pieces. Sand the edge of one side to create a smooth handle.

2. Cut a hole into the bottom of the paper mache eggs and fill with dried beans. Add hot glue to the un-sanded end of the dowel rod, insert into the egg, attaching to the inside top of the egg. Hot glue around the hole of the egg and the dowel rod.

3. Cut pieces of craft paper and Mod Podge to the egg and the handle to create a finished look.

4. Base-coat the maracas with New Leaf Green. With the masking tape create a zigzag pattern as shown.  Tape off thin stripes on the handles. Paint with Lime Green.

5. Remove tape and paint the flowers onto the maracas with Magenta. Add Pure Gold centers to the flowers. Add Champagne glitter to the centers.

6. Seal with gloss sealer.

Tuesday Tutorial: A Festive Sombrero

When people think of May they generally think of Mother’s Day, however there is another reason to celebrate this month and that’s Cinco de Mayo. This festive holiday is approaching quickly, and will be here this weekend. In case you are planning to throw a little fiesta gathering here is a must have item you will need. A sombrero can be used not just to wear, but also as a festive centerpiece for your party. Another creative way to use this item is to line the hat rim with napkins and fill with chips. Kindra Boroff designed this sombrero. It was created primarily using FolkArt Acrylic Paint. This is a beginner level project that will take just about an hour to complete. Plaid Supplies

FolkArt Acrylic Paint: 901 Wicker White, 2553 Lime Green, 643 Azure Blue,  2546 Bright Pink,  437 Lipstick Red

Plaid Tools: 1534  1 ¼” Spouncer,  1” Flat Brush

Other Supplies

Straw sombrero, Blue and white striped 1 ½” ribbon, Hot glue, Turquoise felt, Lime felt, Red felt, Hot pink felt, Tulle, Scissors, Large clear rhinestone.

Instructions

1. Base-coat approximately 4” on the top and bottom rim of the hat with Azure blue.

2. Add some 1” to 2” inch stripes using Bright Pink, Lime Green, and Lipstick Red in that order on the remaining rim of the hat.

3. Base-coat the top of the hat with Azure Blue.

4. Using Bright Pink, Lipstick Red, and Lime Green, spouncer polka dots as shown.

5. Cut a large flower shape from the turquoise felt and a piece of white tulle. Repeat with the other colors of felt, making each flower a little smaller. Hot glue the flowers together and add a rhinestone in the center. Hot glue to the hat.

Make It Monday: Whimsical ‘Love Birds’ Collage Frame

Happy Monday! Today is the last day of April. Isn’t that crazy? This month flew by so quickly. On this last day of the month we wanted to share with you a romantic project to create. Debbie Saenz designed this Whimsical ‘Love Birds’ Collage Frame. Tell a beautiful story about the image you place in the frame, by creating this project. Debbie used a mixture of texture and embellishments to achieve this look. This frame collage was created with Mod Podge, FolkArt acrylic paints and mediums. Full instructions can be found below on how to make this frame.

PLAID Supplies

  • FolkArt ® Acrylic Colors – Light Blue, 2 oz.
  • FolkArt ® Artists Pigments™ – Burnt Umber 2 oz.
  • FolkArt ® Mediums – Antiquing Medium – Apple Butter Brown, 2 oz.
  • Mod Podge ® Matte, 16 oz.
Other Supplies

Wood frame, 2 pieces of coordinating antiqued blue scrapbook paper, Sheet music, Words from magazines or typed words, Bird templates, Branchlike stamp with swirls, 2 yards 1″ ribbon, 1 wooden tag, 3 small blue silk flowers, Key charm, Heart charm, 5 jump rings, Two 1½” antique brass handles, Hot glue, Hand drill, Sandpaper, and Black inkpad

Instructions

  1. Sand rough edges of frame; wipe clean.
  2. Paint the outside edges of the frame and tag and inside frame opening with Burnt Umber; allow to dry then dry brush with Light Blue.
  3. Decoupage scrapbook papers onto frame with the upper right and bottom left corners beings the same pattern and the upper left and bottom right corners being the same pattern; refer to photo. Decoupage tag. Once dry, sand edges of frame and tag smooth.
  4. Trace and cut out birds using the sheet music, cut out 5 musical notes and words that say “Let Us Sing A Sweet Love Song” or any saying of your choice. Dilute Brown Antiquing Medium with water to desired color and paint over birds, musical notes and words; allow to dry then antique edges with full strength Brown Antiquing Medium; allow to dry.
  5. Stamp branches where birds will be perched; refer to photo.
  6. Decoupage birds, musical notes in place; refer to photo. Decoupage words on tag, antique edges of tag; allow to dry. Give the entire frame and tag a coat of Mod Podge to seal; allow to dry.
  7. Drill a small hole in the bottom of the tag and attach a jump ring with heart charm then use Mod Podge to attach the key in place on the tag, aligning holes; dry and attach 4 jump rings.
  8. Attach antique brass handles on each side of the top edge of the frame. Tie ribbons on each side of the front of the frame (attach tag on right side) then, with remaining ribbon, make a loop through handles and tie a bow at the top; refer to photo. Use hot glue to adhere the flowers.

Teaching Thursday: Vintage Style Plates

One of my favorite surfaces to craft on is plates. I like to use this surface, because there are so many creative things one can create with them. Take these vintage style plates. They are so elegant, and stylish. One look at these and they are sure to garner several oohs and ahhs. These vintage style plates would make a lovely Mother’s Day gift or could be the perfect accompaniment at a ladies luncheon. Try using photographs or even writing a poem or personal message. To create these plates you will need some FolkArt and Mod Podge. Below is complete list of supplies, and instructions. Have you ever created a craft project using plates?

PLAID Supplies

  • FolkArt ® Acrylic Colors – Licorice, 2 oz.
  • Mod Podge ® Gloss, 8 oz.
Other Supplies
2 clear glass dinner plates, Tissue paper from an old sewing pattern, 2 old book pages with text, Black scrapbook paper, Silhouette images or photographs, Foam paintbrush, Small detail scissors, Sandpaper

Instructions

1. Silhouette images with small scissors.

2. Tear tissue paper into 3 or 4 inch pieces. Set aside.

3. Cut each book page into a circle slightly larger than the images.

4. Use the black scrapbook paper to cut two circles approx. 3/8 inch larger than each book page (make sure it’s not larger than the base of the plate).

5. Adhere the silhouettes to the center of each book page with Mod Podge carefully smoothing out any bubbles with your fingers. Glue to the back of the glass plate.

6. Use Mod Podge to adhere the black paper circles over the book pages smoothing out any bubbles with your fingers.

7. Randomly attach the tissue papers to the back of the plate overlapping as you work allowing the papers to extend the edges of the plate. Allow to dry.

8. Use sandpaper to remove excess tissue paper from the edges of the plates. Sand towards the back of the plate in one direction.

9. Paint the base of the plate with Licorice.

Note: Wipe the plate clean with a dry cloth. Keep away from water.

Tuesday Huesday: Color Blocking A Room

Color blocking is a design concept, and fashion trend that is very hot right now. Mainly when people think of color blocking they typically think in terms of fashion and accessories. I’m sure you have seen several color blocking editorials in the latest fashion magazines, and on mannequins in the mall, but did you know you could color-block a room in your home? This is non-traditional concept, and a daring one as well. If done correctly you can have a look like the living room pictured above. This image is from , and I love the way this room was decorated. The pops of green hues against the deep neutral tones compliment each other very well. So if you are in the mood to re-decorate any room in your home, be bold and opt to color-block it.

Make It Monday: Jewelry Box for Her

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, why not make something cute and useful for Mom? This jewelry box by Cathie and Steve is a great craft to make and gift to give. Mom can keep all her trinkets, and jewelry organized in this classic looking box. Here’s how to make it.

First, gather these supplies:

PLAID Supplies

  • Plaid ® Hot Glue Gun Helpers
  • Mod Podge ® Professional Tool Set
  • FolkArt ® Metallics – Royal Gold, 2 oz.
  • FolkArt ® Acrylic Colors – Parchment, 2 oz.
  • FolkArt ® Acrylic Colors – Autumn Leaves, 2 oz.
  • Mod Podge ® Matte, 8 oz.
Other Supplies
Wood jewelry box, Small screwdriver, Foam paintbrush, Loose bristle paintbrush for dry brushing, Ruler, Scissors, Scrapbook papers, Hot glue, Ribbons, and Silk Flowers

Instructions

1. Using a small screwdriver, remove the hinges from the jewelry box. Paint the lid of the box with Autumn Leaves (You will only need to paint the base of the lid and the edges). Paint two coats if needed. Paint the base of the box with Parchment paint.

2. Dip the end of the loose bristle brush into Royal Gold paint. Tap of the excess paint so the brush is almost dry. Lightly and quickly brush over the entire lid and base of the box. Use a real light hand so the colors still show through.

3. Trim the scrapbook papers to fit the top and side of the box. To create a tattered edge, tear the tops of the papers so the core shows.

4. Working on top of the lid, apply a thick coat of Mod Podge. Apply Mod Podge to the back of the trimmed paper. Position the paper on top of the lid. Use the brayer to smooth the paper and to prevent air bubbles. Wait 15 min. and top coat with a layer of Mod Podge. Repeat this step on the sides of the box.

5. Once all the Mod Podge is dry. Hot glue ribbon around the base of the box. Glue ribbons and silk flowers to the top of the box.

Tuesday Huesday: Closet Makeover

You’ve heard the saying before, out with old and in with the new, well that is what I think about during the spring season. Spring is the best time of year to do some necessary cleaning, purging, and organizing. One place in everyone’s home that could use always use a spring-cleaning, is the closet. Now don’t be ashamed, but be honest is your closet bursting at the seams exploding with clothing? If it is, you are long overdue for a closet cleansing. Some of you may just want to completely redo your closet, and start from scratch. I personally think every women dreams of designing her dream closet. The image above is of a closet I found on HGTV.com. It is amazing, and I love the colors used throughout. The colors make it a warm, inviting, and tranquil environment. If you do plan to redo you entire closet, don’t be afraid to add color. Be as adventurous as you wish, in your closet. It’s not just a closet; it is your own personal space. Hopefully one day I will be able to build my dream closet from scratch, but until then I will be pinning images on Pinterest of what I would like it to look like :) Have you ever redesigned your closet?

Teaching Thursday: Step Stool by Every Creative Endeavor

Hello PLAID readers!! I am so excited to be here today sharing a fun little project. My name is Amanda and I am the creator and author of Every Creative Endeavor – a fun little blog about all things DIY for you and your home! I love to make items for my house; there is just something so great about completing a project that beautifies your home. I also love making things for my kids – again, there is something so gratifying in seeing your kids love something you have made them. Today I am going to share a fun little Monogrammed Step Stool I made for my son.  We just finished potty training but I realized he would need something to help reach the toilet and the sink to wash his hands and a fun little step stool was the perfect solution!

First, I headed out to Michaels – a great store to pick up PLAID products – and found this fun little stool.

I brought it home and used #459 Hauser Green Light by FolkArt by PLAID and gave it a few good coats. This green is one of my very favorite colors! It is bright and fun and perfect for a little boy.

Next I cut out a “Q” with some scrapbook paper I had in my supplies. I used a cutting machine to cut it out so you could use one of those if you have one or just print one out on your computer and trace it onto your paper – I used to that all the time. It works great!! Using Gloss Mod Podge, I glued the letter onto the stool. I first applied a coat to the stool and then applied my “Q” and then added a few more coats over the top. TIP: If you are finding little bubbles in your letter while the Mod Podge is drying, simply take your hair dryer and apply it to the bubble and it will flatten.

I also used the Mod Podge to coat the entire stool and give it a nice little glossy shine. It turned out perfect and my son loves it!

It is the perfect little step stool to reach those high places. And yes, even I have used it a couple times to reach a few things up high in my pantry. My daughter loves it too so I may be making a fun little pink one in the near future!
