TGIF: Holli’s Ballard Inspired Wall Plaque

Tile Board featured in the Ballard Designs catalog.
I was recently looking through a Ballard Designs catalog and saw a great wall decoration.  What caught my eye was the soft color palette, which I immediately converted to Folk Art in my head!  So, I got out some Folk Art paint chips and started referencing colors and design and came up with this!

Supplies to create my own tile board.

I gathered my supplies, the Folk Art colors, a Plaid surface that’s a cute wood sign with nine squares set inside the wood frame, which, I thought, was a perfect match for the wall hanging I saw in the catalog, and a Peel & Stick painting stencil from Simply that had some great images on it to make patterns.

Basecoat the tile board and tiles.

I basecoated everything and set the wood squares in order as I wanted them in the frame.    Easy enough, right?

Determine stencil placement.

I also played a little with the stencils, and figured out where I wanted to place each image from the stencil.  This made things much easier when I started the actual painting of the project.

Side load the #10 flat brush with Cinnamon.

I dipped my #10 flat brush into water and side loaded into the Cinnamon color.  Then, I just followed the outside edge of the wood square and shaded the sides like this.

Basecoat the butterfly.

I used a very light touch with the stencil brush to basecoat the butterfly on the center square and lightly added the Cinnamon this way.

I also added a slight dry brushed edge to some of the squares on the outside edges and with an all over brushed effect on others, using Ivory White.

Use the Peel and Stick stencils to repeat patterns.

These Peel & Stick stencils make it very easy to make all over patterns with the smaller elements on the sheet.

Mark the halfway point on the frame to line up the stencils.

I used a ruler to mark the half way point of the outer edge of the frame so I could center the stencils I used on it.

Use an almost dry brush when you stencil.

I tried to make everything look soft by using an almost dry brush to stencil with.  I also shaded the images using this technique.  This way, I kept a continuous look throughout the project.  I love how it turned out, don’t you?

Use E6000 glue to keep the tiles in place on the board.

Finally, I used E6000 to place the wood squares back into the frame and let it dry for the day with a fan blowing on it to be sure everything stayed in place when it was hung on the wall.

TGIF Project: Patriot Canvas

Patriot Canvas by Sherri Ragsdale

Memorial Day is next week-end! And while most of us see it as the official start of Summer and backyard barbeque season, it is a special day set aside to honor the men and women who risk their lives everyday for our country. So before you butter up the corn and toss the kids in the pool, paint up this tribute to our American heroes.

Sherrie Ragsdale, one of Plaid’s fantastic project designers, made this using two pieces of paint-to-ready canvas. You can do the same thing, or get a little creative and paint this design on your grilling apron or even the table cloth for your picnic table. No matter what, it’s a nice way to remind people of what the long week-end is all about.

TGIF Project: Daisy Pot Basket

Daisy Pot Basket by Julie Lewis

Now that you’ve gotten the 101 on how to paint on terra cotta pots from Chris Williams, Julie Lewis is going to show you have to create this super cute basket. Julie’s project is not intended for plants, so she didn’t seal the pot. However, if you do want to plant some daisies in this pot once you’ve painted it, simply seal the interior of the pot first, then follow the rest of Julie’s instructions.

Let’s get started! First, gather these supplies:

TGIF Project: Butterfly Canvas

Butterfly Canvas

I love watching everything come into bloom in Spring. It’s the time of year when I keep the windows open and welcome the fresh air and budding flowers into my home. This is also the perfect time to take inspiration from nature and create some pretty pieces to remind you of sunny days when the weather is grey and gloomy. This Butterfly Canvas that Julie Lewis designed and created does just that! Hang it in a favorite place at home or give it to Mom for Mother’s Day — it’s a great way to let her know how she lights up your life.

TGIF Project: Wild Painted Easter Egg

Don’t get me wrong – I love traditional pink, green and yellow Easter projects.  But I’m also in love with funkier versions as well.  Plaid designer Debbie Saenz came up with giraffe pattern painted wood egg, and I really love it.  The good news is that you don’t need a pattern, you only need a pencil.  Simply draw random giraffe spots and paint them.  I picture a whole collection of different safari themed eggs.  Wouldn’t that be cool?  Find the project instructions here.

TGIF Project: Personalized Chalkboard Easter Buckets

Of course there are the standard issue plastic woven Easter baskets, but this year I’m looking for something just a little more original!  I happened upon Kelly’s chalkboard Easter baskets at , and I was impressed.  As Kelly says, “these can be used long after Easter!”  You see, one side is decoupaged (with our favorite decoupage medium Mod Podge!) and the side you see above uses FolkArt Chalkboard paint.  See Kelly’s tutorial and how she plans to use them all year right .
