Web Wednesday: DIY Monogram Doormat

Recently I moved into a new place a few months back. I have almost completed my decorating for the entire place, but the other day I realized I did not have a welcome mat for my front door. I had attempted to buy one several times before, but unfortunately I never came across anything I fancied, until today. One of my new blogger friends, Cheryl from That’s What Che Said, created this DIY Monogram Doormat. When I saw it I immediately was envious. This is so chic. I was even more blown away when I discovered Cheryl made this using Apple Barrel paint. To see how this was made from beginning to end click here. Tuesday Tutorial: Stenciled and Stitched Napkin and Charger

During the spring I love having a picnic. It is one of my favorite things to do this time of year. There’s nothing like packing up some sandwiches, chips, sodas, and some fruit to lounge and dine at a park on nice warm day. Typically picnics are very casual, and paper plates or Tupperware are used to eat off of. Well here is a way you can add some flair to your picnic, create these stenciled and stitched napkin and charger. Cathie and Steve designed this adorable project. It is an easy project that will take an hour to create. Have you been on a picnic this year?

PLAID Supplies

  • Apple Barrel ® Colors – Melted Chocolate, 2 oz.
  • FolkArt ® Shiny™ Acrylic Paint – Sugar Plum, 2 oz.
  • Plaid ® Craft Stencils – Value Packs – Foliage/Leaf
  • FolkArt ® Acrylic Colors – Parchment, 2 oz.
Other Supplies
Stencil paintbrush, 17 x 17″ Light color cotton fabric (pre-washed), 17 x 17″ printed cotton fabric (pre-washed), Low tack painters tape, Sewing machine, Rhinestones, Gem glue, Buttons, Hand sewing needle and thread, and a Plate charger
Instructions

1. Position the bird stencil in the corner (1.5” from the edge) of the light colored fabric. Tape the stencil to the fabric to secure. Load the stencil paintbrush with sugar plum paint, tap off the excess paint. Working directly above the stencil, tap the brush over the bird design. Lift the stencil to reveal the design. Next stencil the branch with melted chocolate paint and the leaves with parchment paint. Wash stencil and reuse. Heat set the paint with an iron.

2. Place the painted fabric right-side down on the right-side of the printed fabric. Pin around the edges. Stitch around the edges (leave a space open for turning and stuffing). Trim the edges and corners, turn the napkin right-side out, press. Sew a boarder around the edge.

3. Embellish the napkin with free-form stitching. (This will also serve as a quilt effect, holding the two pieces together) Hand sew buttons to the bird design. Tie up the napkin with a scrap of fabric.

4. To paint the charger, tape the bird stencil to the edge of the charger. Load the stencil paintbrush with sugar plum paint, tap off the excess paint. Working directly above the stencil, tap the brush over the bird design. Lift the stencil to reveal the design. If needed, fill in the design with paint and a small brush.

Color blocking is a huge trend right now. I am sure you have seen this trend on many handbags and shoes. Well in case you are looking for an affordable way to stay in style, watch this video to learn how to color block your own accessories. In this video you will see how a girl transformed a handbag and shoes, with several Apple Barrel colors. I love this idea, and she gives great easy to follow instructions on how to recreate this look. This is a great craft project to tackle over the weekend. Freelance Friday: DIY Painted Toms

It seems like everywhere I look nowadays, all I see are DIY shoes. Shoes have definitely become one of the most popular surfaces to craft on. I am constantly amazed to see how creative and crafty people can get with them. One that recently caught my eye were these DIY painted Toms. A girl named Lauren created these shoes. You can check out her craft blog, Lauren Acklin, here. As you can see from the before picture, these shoes are very basic and simple. All white, that’s what you get, until this designer added some Apple Barrel paint to them. I love these shoes, and how they were designed. Scene it Saturday: FolkArt & Apple Barrel Spring Floral Nail Art

Typically when you think of FolkArt and Apple Barrel paints, you know them to be used on craft projects. Well that is a correct use, however did you know that people use these paints on their nails? I can’t tell you how fascinated I am by all the creative videos you can find on YouTube. Normally I am always scouring YouTube to watch cool craft how to videos, and I recently stumbled across how to nail art that included craft paints. Check out this video, and learn how you can use FolkArt and Apple Barrel paints to create a spring floral nail design.

Tuesday Tutorial: Pretty in Pinks and Purple Table Decor

Can you believe that this is the last day in the month of January? I know I can’t. The year is already flying by, and before you know it Valentine’s Day will be here. Paint Me Plaid: Guest Blogger (My Girlish Whims)

Happy Friday everyone! We here at Paint Me Plaid love to showcase the amazing crafts that other craft bloggers create, but in addition to showing off their crafts we want to spotlight the crafter as well. Today we have a guest blogger, Rebecca. Enjoy!

Hello there! My name is Rebecca and I blog over at . My blog is all about beading, crafting, and general life as a girl!

I’m a 21 year old girly girl from the Philly suburbs area. I’m currently finishing up my last semester of college and craft basically whenever I’m not in class or doing homework! I’m a major beadaholic, and have been making jewelry since I was a kid. I also love doing DIY crafts of all kinds, and love having a blog to show my creations off to someone else besides my roommates! I’m also getting married in February so have been having fun making wedding plans and doing as many DIY projects for it as I can.

Today I’m going to show you how to make these owl paper lanterns!

I found these paper lanterns for $1 at the dollar store while in search for decorations for my sister’s owl themed baby shower. They are pretty ugly as is, but I got an idea to spruce them up a bit using some Apple Barrel paint!

I picked three different paint colors that coordinated well with the owl/woodland/orange theme of the shower.

And squeezed the paint directly onto the lantern…

and then gently bushed it out all over the lantern.

I cut out pieces of card stock for the eyes and nose and hot glued them on.

I also traced out little feet with card stock.

And then cut them out and hot glued them onto the bottom of the lantern.

Lastly, I cut out wings and hot glued them to the side of the lantern.

Then ta-da! I cute little owl lantern!

I hung them off a light above the kitchen table where the food was for the shower. The owls were the perfect touch for the shower!
