Tuesday Huesday: A Cozy Halloween Room

Decorating for Halloween can come in many forms. You can decorate your porch outside, dress up yourself, or spruce up a room in your home. Well have you ever thought about decorating for Halloween, minus the scary decor? Instead of using ghosts and spider webs, try using a nice Halloween color palette. Incorporate some stencils to add a little touch of creativity to the room. Here is an example pictured above. This room used Halloween colors well, and this palette is very warm and inviting. Try replicating this rooms decor, by using one of our stencils.

This palette was created using FolkArt acrylic paint colors:#450 Parchment, #925 Wrought Iron, #628 Pure Orange, and #433 Terra Cotta

Make it Monday: Hanging Halloween Decor

by: Julie Lewis

Halloween may be right around the corner but, there is still plenty of time to create something special for your home or for that spirited party planned. This unique and easy hanging frame décor featuring Martha Stewart Crafts™ can be done within a day. The compliments won’t stop from your ghoulish guests.

Here is all you will need:

Martha Stewart Crafts™ Multi Surface Satin Acrylic Craft Paint – 32057 Mace, 32082 Beetle Black, 32084 Green Curry, Martha Stewart Crafts™ Multi Surface Glitter Acrylic Craft Paint – 32161 Peridot, Martha Stewart Crafts™ Stencil Set – 32273 Looped Script, Martha Stewart Crafts™ Patterning Tape – 32238, Martha Stewart Crafts™ Stencil Tape – 32292, Martha Stewart Crafts™ Foam Pouncers – 32243, Martha Stewart Crafts™ Adhesive Stencil Film – 32250, 2 – 8” x 10” black picture frames, 1 – 5” x 7” black picture frame, 4 – eye hooks, 4 – cup hooks, Orange gros grain ribbon, Pliers, Adhesive glue, Paper/pencil, Ruler, #1 liner brush, Craft knife/cutting surface

Print out your pattern and gather your supplies. Remove the glass from your frames and punch out the letters needed for your words.

Place your pattern on your cutting surface and tape a piece of adhesive stencil over it.

Cut your stencil like this and set aside.

On a piece of paper, trace your words out to create a pattern for stenciling.

Find the center of your 5 x 7 glass and place a strip of the ¼” patterning tape.

Place three more strips of tape equally spaced on either side of center strip.

Apply Mace with a pouncer over tape. When slightly dry, apply more coats if needed.

Carefully remove tape from glass. You can clean up any fuzzy edges with your craft knife.

Tape your face pattern under the glass for positioning, then place your adhesive stencil on top of glass.

Apply Beetle Black and remove stencil…now your middle piece is done!

Center and tape your traced out words to the back of the 8 x 10 pieces of glass.

Apply Green Curry to letters and Beetle Black to stencil flourish.

Use brush to paint Peridot Glitter over letters, Apply several coats as needed.

Cut two 5” x 8 ½” pieces of paper…center and tape over the front of your stenciled words.

Flip your glass over and tape off rectangle.

Apply several coats of Mace and remove tape.

Paint your eye hooks and cup hooks with Beetle Black. A tip is to stick them in a piece of Styrofoam or something to hold them so you won’t have to when painting…let dry.

Measure in 2 ½” from ends of larger frames and mark with pencil for hooks.

Place a piece of tape to mark center for large and small frames. Line up centers and then mark on smaller frame where you marked on larger frame for exact hook line up.

Use your craft knife to start a hold and screw in your hooks. Cup hooks on one frame and eye hooks on other frame.

Create a bow from ribbon leaving long tails and secure bow with glue so it won’t untie.

Remove glass holders from frames with pliers. Apply adhesive glue to inside edge of frames and insert your glass pieces.

Glue hanger at desired length and cut off excess.

Hook your frames together and hang your eye-catching Halloween décor!

Web Wednesday: Easy to Paint Damask Box

One craft that I believe you can never have enough of are, keepsake boxes. Throughout our lives we are always accumulating little trinkets and treasures that we want to hold onto. Photos, jewelry, hair bows, etc… The best way to keep track and to organize these items, is to place them in a keepsake box. A box is a great surface to craft on, and one of the easiest ways to decorate your box is by using stencils. Recently Plaid just released a new line of Easy to Paint stencils. One of our in house designers created this amazing Damask box, using one of the new stencils. Click here to find instructions on how to re-create this craft, and visit your local Michaels or AC Moore craft stores to find the entire line of Easy to Paint products. Is a box one of your favorite surfaces to paint on?

Freelance Friday: Halloween Door Knob Decor

Here is an elegant home décor accessory for you to make, just in time for Halloween. Ir was designed by one of our newest designers, Laura Bray. To see more craft creations from Laura please check out here blog, Katy Diddys.

This project features a new stencil from our Easy to Paint line, called Curly Tree. It also includes FolkArt paint, and Apple Barrel Paint. This is an intermediate skilled project, which takes 2 or more hours to complete. The new easy to paint line is available at AC Moore, and Michaels craft stores.

Plaid Supplies Used: FolkArt Acrylic Paint – 479 Pure Black, FolkArt Painting Stencil (Curly Tree)-30610, Spouncers Value Pack-34106, and Apple Barrel Acrylic Paint-20504 Black

Additional Supplies Used: (1) 5 ½ ” x 6 ½ ” piece of linen fabric, (2) ¾  ” x 5 ½ ” strips of black and white polka dot fabric, (2) ¾ ” x 7 ½ ” strips of black and white polka dot fabric, (1) 6 ½” x 7 ½” piece of Halloween themed fabric, 16” piece of black and white printed ribbon, Flat backed crystals in Fall colors, Pillow stuffing

Instructions:

  1. Lay down your linen fabric onto a piece of plastic wrap.  Place the FolkArt Stencil on top of the fabric, centered.  TIP: I use painter’s tape to secure the fabric onto the plastic covered work surface and the stencil onto the fabric.
  2. Using your pouncer, gently dab the Apple Barrel acrylic paint onto the fabric, within the stencil.
  3. Gently pull off the stencil and allow the paint to dry.
  4. Apply the flat backed crystals around your image in a pleasing pattern.  Follow manufacturer’s instructions for heat setting them, or use fabric glue to affix them.
  5. Sew the two 5 ½” x ¾” strips of polka dot fabric onto the top and bottom of your stenciled piece of linen.  Sew the two 7 ½” x ¾” strips onto the sides.  Use a ¼” seam allowance.
  6. Press your seams and then lay down your stenciled piece of linen, face up.  Take your 6 ½” x 7 ½” piece of Halloween fabric and lay it face down on top of the stenciled fabric.
  7. Take your ribbon, fold it in half and lay it between the two pieces of fabric. Be sure center the two cut ends at the top of the fabric.  Make sure the looped end is facing down and allow the cut ends to extend about 1” from the edge of the fabrics.  Tuck the ribbon between the fabric pieces so that it won’t get caught as you sew the seams.  Pin everything in place.
  8. Using a ¼” seam allowance, sew around the edges of the fabric.  Be sure to leave a small opening at the bottom of the pieces to allow for turning out and stuffing your door knob pillow.
  9. Turn-fabric pillow out.  Fill with pillow stuffing.  Whip stitch the opening on the bottom closed.

Michaels In Store Event Recap

Last Friday we attended a special in store event, for Michael’s Reward Members. This in store event was a huge success. It featured Cathie Filian and Steve Piacenza, along with Mod Podge Rocks, Amy Anderson. Cathie and Steve did a live Q&A with members, that was also live streamed to viewers online. Afterwards, all three craft celebrities assisted the crowd with making some craft projects. All attendees had the opportunity to select from three craft projects to make. They could make one, or all three projects. Everyone there has lots of fun. We even did several giveaways, of  Mod Podge filled gift baskets. We will be posting some video of the event later on this week, so be sure to check back to see it. Hopefully we will see you next time, at the next Michaels in store event.

Cathie Filian & Steve Piacenza

Cathie and Steve pose with “Grandma Betty.” She drove over 80 miles to attend this event. She was so sweet, and very excited to be there.

Attendees focused on creating their crafts, at the Make and Take tables.

Attendees could make this stencil project.

Another craft option to make, was to paint a notebook cover.

Or they could make a frame using Mod Podge. Amy Anderson, from Mod Podge Rocks made these.

A few lucky attendees left the event, with this fabulous Mod Podge gift basket.

So many people attended, that the staff at Michaels even had to add additional tables to accommodate everyone.
